The tradition of sports journalism attracting some of the finest writers in journalism can be traced back to Victorian England, where many modern sports – such as association football, cricket and rugby union – were first codified and organised into something that could be considered journalistic. The coverage of events such as The Boat Race – an annual rowing competition between the universities of Oxford and Cambridge – was one of the earliest examples of a mass spectator sport.

After the Second World War, the sport sections of national daily and Sunday newspapers continued to expand. This included the adoption of policies by many papers of employing former sports stars to write columns and articles, such as Harold Abrahams for The Times and Sir Leonard Hutton for the London Evening News. This era also saw the start of a long-term trend for sports journalists to write books which analysed aspects of a particular sport. Tom Bower’s 2004 book Broken Dreams, which analyzed British football, and Andrew Jennings’ series of books on the Olympic Games and FIFA, were examples of this.
The rise of the Internet has led to an increased number of sports news websites, with many offering breaking news, team and player news, fantasy sports and other features. This has been helped by the availability of mobile phones which have greatly increased the speed at which sports news can be accessed. The proliferation of sports news websites and social media has allowed fans to become personally engaged with the latest sporting events.
